On 30 April, 2015, our home-built surgical navigation system won gold medal at the 43rd International Exhibition of Geneva Invention (IEGI). The IEGI was well-known as the world’s most important specialized invention meeting and held once a year. In this year, with about 1,000 inventions and more than 750 participants from 48 countries around the world, many excellent novel inventions were exhibited and competed during this meeting. This meeting was also considered as a fair and longest exhibition which covered the topics of technology, medicine, health, environment, ecology, security and more.

Our surgical navigation system using optical molecular imaging technology, was independently developed by Key Laboratory of Molecular Imaging, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Based on the previous research of the molecular imaging methods, our system can realize the precise dissection guidance of early-stage micro tumor and improve the efficient of the surgical progress. For more than 10 years of technical research, we have 3 issued US patents and achieved more than 60 authorized national patents, formed an integral independent intellectual property rights. For the application of our system, it passed the Chinese Food and Drug Administration’s test and the ethical approval of several Chinese hospitals. Now, hundreds of patients with liver, breast and gastric cancer patients accept the treatment under our system guidance of the precision surgery. Compared with the traditional methods, the detection rate, precision of surgery and prognosis of patients were improved. As a novel imaging modality applied for intraoperative precision surgery, this progress showed great potential in high-level medical equipment translation and expanded the scope of research and application of Chinese proprietary medical equipment in the near future.
