With the establishment of the European FET Program Human Brain Project and the BRAIN project in the United States, Brain Science has started its new wave of revolution. On November 7th 2013, the Human Brain Project Neuroinformatics Platform Director, Professor Sean Hill Visited CASIA. Scientific Investigations on how the brain works as well as how Brain Science will advance Information and Communication Technologies were extensively discussed during his visit.

Professor Sean Hill also serves as the Scientific Director of the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facilities (INCF). During his talk at CASIA, he introduced four international collaboration projects under INCF, including: Digital Brain Atlasing, Multi-scale Modeling, Ontologies of Neural Structures and Standards for Data Sharing. After the introduction of INCF related projects, he focused on the introduction of the strategic plans for the Human Brain Project (HBP) and its recent advances. The Human Brain Project is under the European Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Program, with one billion Euros investments from the European Commission. This project aims at having deep understanding of the human brain through large scale brain simulations. It also aims at advancing the Computing Technologies and Brain Medical Treatment Technologies. The HBP project plans to simulate the human brain by integrating the distributed brain data and knowledge, and investigating the information processing mechanisms as well as its cognitive architectures of the human brain. Recent simulations on the mouse brain were demonstrated and extensively discussed.

After the talk, Professor Sean Hill participated in several discussions with scientific staffs and students from different research groups. His talk provides a comprehensive overview on the recent advances of brain science and Neuroinformatics research worldwide.

Sean Hill is a Professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He serves as the director of the Neuroinformatics platform in the Human Brain Project. He also serves as the Scientific Director of the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facilities (INCF).
