Three IEEE international conferences, including the IEEE/INFORMS International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics (SOLI’11), the IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety (ICVES'11), and the IEEE International Conference on Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI’11), were held by the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA) at Beijing Friendship Hotel on July 10-12, 2011.

About 200 experts and scholars from more than 20 countries and regions, including China, United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Spain, Switzerland, Iran, Japan, South Korea, India, and Singapore, participated in the conferences. During the three days, the conference committee has organized three plenary speeches, seven sessions, and three workshops. The conferences mainly focus on the past achievements, current issues and future developments in the fields of service operations, logistics and informatics, vehicular electronics and safety, as well as intelligence and security informatics. The experts, scholars and scientists worldwide actively discussed and exchanged opinions on the related issues in their fields.

On the morning of July 10, Professor Feiyue Wang, Dean of the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Control and Management of Complex Systems, CASIA, chaired the opening ceremony and extended a warm welcome to the participants.Academician Chongqing Guo from Tongji University, Dr. Glenn R. Widmann from Delphi Automotive Company, and Professor Ali Hessami from the University of East London, delivered the wonderful plenary speeches respectively.

IEEE/INFORMS SOLI’11 is an important annual academic conference in the field of service science. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss issues, challenges and future directions, share their research findings and experience in service design, innovation, marketing, and operations. SOLI’11 received 144 submissions, the research results of which involved service operation, service innovation, logistics and supply chain, service marketing, and service management. After strict reviews, 71 papers were accepted, covering the entire field of service science and technology with an increasing development, as well as reflecting the latest domestic and overseas research findings in this field.

IEEE ICVES'11 is an annual forum sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS). It brings together researchers and scholars in the field of intelligent vehicle to discuss the research findings in vehicle electronics and safety systems. SOLI’11 received 92 submissions, involving vehicle detection, vehicle signal processing, micro electro mechanical system, system on chip, automobile engine control, vehicle bus, driver assistance system, sensor networks, adaptive cruise control system, and embedded operating system. After strict reviews, 58 papers were accepted, reflecting the latest domestic and overseas research findings in this field.

IEEE ISI’11 concentrates on utilizing and developing the advanced digital network information systems and intelligent algorithms, to support the national and international security by integrating the information technology, organizational structure, and security strategy. ISI’11 has accepted 53 papers out of the 97 submissions, including 43 oral presentations and 10 poster presentations. Three workshops were held during the ISI’11, including the Workshop on Software Security and Protection (SSP), the 3rd Workshop on Social Computing (SOCO), and the 6th Pacific Asia Workshop on Intelligence and Security Informatics (PAISI). Springer Company will publish the papers accepted by PAISI in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS).

On the evening of July 11, CASIA held a big banquet at Beijing Friendship Hotel. Professor Feiyue Wang hosted the banquet, and the three chairs summarized each conference separately. The prizes for research findings, leadership, best paper of ISI’11, as well as best paper, best student paper, and best application paper of SOLI’11 were awarded at the banquet. After the discussion, the committee decided that ICVES’12 would be held in Istanbul, Turkey, ISI’12 in Washington, United States, SOLI’12 and the IEEE International Conference on Mechatronic and Embedded Systems and Applications (MESA’12) in Suzhou, China, all by CASIA.

The successful organization of the three IEEE international conferences has enhanced the mutual understanding among the experts and scholars, providing the new research directions in the fields of logistics service, vehicular electronics and safety, as well as intelligence and security informatics. Moreover, the conferences have broadened the young scientists’ knowledge; have promoted the cooperation between China and other countries and regions; as well as have expanded China’s global impact on these fields.
